One of the 12 scientific pillars of the National Water Research Center

HRI Overview

On 1975 Hydraulics Research Institute was established to take over and extend the work of the Hydraulics Research Experimental Station, founded in 1947. Hydraulics Research Institute (HRI) is one of twelve research institutes within the National Water Research Center (NWRC) of The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) of Egyptian government.

HRI constructed in critical region of River Nile of Egypt at west bank of Damietta Branch of the Nile River. Since HRI established and still work with its main goal which is the largest specialized Institute in the region in water related research and river hydraulics studies. There is a strong link between the applied research activities of the institute and the needs of the National Water Research Centre and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation development plans. In addition, the Institute carries out studies for other ministries, governmental and non-governmental bodies and consulting firms. Also, technical training and international cooperation in river engineering subjects have been helpful to build institutional capacity.

Area of Expertise

HRI is one of the oldest hydraulic institutes in the Middle East and Africa. The high reputation which was built within the region and at the International Level led HRI to become a focal point for researchers from all around the region and for technology transfer to the neighboring countries. HRI acquired this reputation from long practice, experience and excellent performance in solving real life problems.

  • River Dynamics
  • Coastal Dynamics
  • infrastructure and Environmental flows
  • Water resources management

HRI Vision

To be a pioneering center of excellence in hydraulic and water-related research, recognized locally, regionally, and internationally for advancing innovative solutions to complex water challenges.
We aim to empower communities and decision-makers by providing science-driven insights, fostering sustainable water management, and enhancing resilience to environmental changes through state-of-the-art research, capacity building, and international collaboration.

HRI Mission

  • The Institute serves an important role both on a local, regional and an international scale. The Institute was originally built to serve as a trusted research unit of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation for hydraulic and sedimentation problems in the Nile River. The Institute conducts applied and academic research that helps the river valley and coastal communities become more resilient to existential threats by the forces of nature. Rising sea levels, floods, river shoaling and sedimentation, scour at hydraulic structures pose threats towards the livelihoods, the sustainability of infrastructure and economy of their surrounding communities.
  • The institute serves and connects a suite of academic, public, and private entities, by leveraging knowledge and tools that can help address and solve complex hydraulic problems. The strategy of the hydraulics research institute is to address these problems and find solutions by developing numerical models and decision support tools to aid policy makers and stakeholders with science-based solutions.
  • The Institute carries a multitude of research projects, including local target-based solutions to regional-large scale research plans. The institute also conducts consultancy services and technical reviews. We are thoroughly committed to robustness and rigorous science and engineering. With our multiverse technical team of wide spectrum of backgrounds, we help address and solve complex fluvial, coastal and deltaic challenges around the world.
