Heavy infestation along the shores of Lakes Kyoga and Albert in Uganda, driven mainly by Salvinia, disrupted daily activities for lakeside communities and limited their access to usable water. In response, Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation worked with Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries to implement the project “Aquatic Weeds Management in Landing Sites on Lakes Kyoga and Albert”.
The project aims to limit the spread of weeds, forecast infestation levels, and facilitate rapid field action. It strengthened routine maintenance efforts, supplied manual equipment, and introduced technologies that turn aquatic weeds into biogas, organic fertilizer, and compost. It also delivered training and capacity-building programs for operational teams and local beneficiaries. Since 2018, the project has expanded through three phases to reach multiple landing sites along both lakes.
